Happy 3 month-iversary to me. Yep, that’s right. I’ve have been in China for three months, as of today. This is when they say the honeymoon period ends–the excitement of living in a foreign country has ended and you have your routine. With less distraction and more time to think, the culture shock and homesickness start to hit. Fortunately (maybe) for me, the holidays rushed the process a bit. That’s not to say I won’t still experience bouts of it here or there—I’m sure I will—but at least the hardest ones are over.
Very few responded to my cry for help on the itching front. My parents have encouraged me to do laundry and utilize lots of lotion. The featured picture today is actually my shopping cart from the local supermarket. As you can see, it’s completely related to getting rid of my itch, excluding the gum. I’ve currently got a load of clothes in the wash and my skin is covered in baby oil. I’m about to take a Benadryl to help me go to sleep. Again, I’ve seen no real sign of bugs. I’m fairly sure it’s just extremely dry skin. Even so, I’m trying to get rid of it.
Wanna hear a funny story? So I went in early to work again today. I wanted to finish up a couple more things for organizing and I had some actual work to do before everyone came in. The ayi (cleaning lady) came over to me at one point and started asking questions. Unfortunately, I really can’t speak Chinese. I tried to use Google Translate, but she ended up just laughing at the translation. It didn’t go so well, but she was fairly forgiving. She said it was fine—which I actually did understand—and shook her head as she walked away.
Anyway, I’m headed to bed. Goodnight.

Kristin,
I have the same problem with itching skin. I went to the dermatologist yesterday and she has me soaking in a solution of 1/2 cup bleach to half a tub of water. Then cover your body with a medicated moistureizer. I am also supposed to take an antihistamine . I hope this helps.
I really enjoy your blogs! I look forward to reading them when you put them out.
I remember you from when you were little. I lived down on Timberlane Drive. I have two boys a little older than you. They really enjoyed the Hesswood Hills neighborhood.

Barbara,
Thank you so much for the solution. Unfortunately, I don’t have a bathtub. But I am trying to use baby oil and Bath and Bodyworks lotion. I’m hoping I don’t get to the point where I need antihistamines. I hope it’s helping you, though.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the blogs. I hope they stay enjoyable as the year goes on.
Thanks,
Kristen

I’m guessing an allergy. I think Barbara’s suggestion of an antihistamine is good. Try Loratadine (Claritin). I have a mild allergy to one of my prescription meds that manifests this way. Good luck! Hang in there! I enjoy your blog.

Jennifer,
Thank you for your advice. I have loratadine, but I realized that I haven’t been as diligent about taking it recently. I’m being careful about taking it now. Hopefully it and the Benadryl will work wonders. Glad you like the blog.
Thanks,
Kristen
